How we work

An unexpected assessment can put pressure on your business or personal finances. We assess the legal and factual issues, explain your options and help you decide how to respond.

Our approach combines legal advice with extensive tax experience. We can work with your accountant to assemble the relevant records and address the issues raised by the revenue authority.

  1. 01

    Review the assessment and timing

We examine the assessment, correspondence and relevant dates, then identify the issues and any immediate steps.

  2. 02

    Build the grounds and evidence

We review the law and supporting records, identify gaps and prepare the objection or submission.

  3. 03

    Manage the response

We lodge the agreed material, deal with follow-up questions and advise on the decision and available next steps.

Choose the right tax-dispute pathway

The authority, decision and stage determine the process. We first identify the notice, deadline, disputed amount, evidence and commercial objective. ATO matters and NSW state-tax matters have different statutory rules.

An accountant may resolve a simple reconciliation; a valuer is needed for a land-value challenge. We scope legal work around the part of the dispute that needs legal analysis, while addressing collection and related business decisions separately.

Frequently asked questions

Does an objection stop the tax becoming payable?

Do not assume it does. Payment, interest and any recovery arrangement need separate attention while the objection is prepared and determined.

Can you work with my accountant?

Yes. We can divide responsibility for accounting records and calculations, legal grounds, evidence and dispute strategy.

Is a land-value dispute a Revenue NSW tax objection?

Generally the Valuer General handles land-value objections. Revenue NSW handles the tax treatment applied to the assessed value.

What should I bring to the first discussion?

Bring all notices and assessments, service records, correspondence, the outcome you seek and the next deadline. These determine the appropriate process and scope.

Discuss your assessment

Start with a complimentary conversation

The initial consultation for tax matters is complimentary. Tell us which authority issued the assessment, the tax involved and any deadline. We will discuss the next step and confirm scope and fees before substantive work begins.
